About the Manaslu Circuit Trek
The Manaslu Circuit Trek can currently be considered the number-one trekking route in Nepal. Located within the Manaslu Conservation Area of Gorkha District, this trek offers breathtaking views of the world’s eighth-highest mountain.
If you are planning a trekking adventure in Nepal, the Manaslu Trek is an excellent choice that fulfills the desire for true adventure. The trek begins from Macha Khola in Gorkha and ends at Dharapani in Manang, taking approximately 13 days to complete. If you wish to extend your journey by including the Tsum Valley trek, the trip can be stretched to 22 days.
Among the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, Mount Manaslu is considered one of the most beautiful mountains. It is surrounded by remarkable peaks, the Annapurna range to the west and Ganesh Himal to the east making the region exceptionally scenic. This trek is known for being peaceful, pristine, and ideal for those seeking both natural beauty and adventure.
Along the trail, you will encounter a variety of plants, birds, and unique natural landscapes. You can observe terraced fields of rice and millet in the lower regions, and at higher altitudes, fields of barley, wheat, and potatoes cultivated on alpine plains.
The trail offers incredible views of the Budi Gandaki River, with its turquoise waters, powerful waterfalls, and dramatic canyons. The cantilever bridges and towering suspension bridges make the journey even more thrilling.
Since 1992, this region has been open to only 400 trekkers per year, giving the trek a remote and exploratory feel even today. If you want to experience what trekking in Nepal felt like in the 1980s, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is a perfect destination. However, both physical and mental fitness are essential for this journey.
As you gradually head north, you reach Larke La Pass, situated near the Tibetan border. Although the altitude poses challenges, the surrounding panorama of snow-covered peaks transforms your hardship into a rewarding experience. Standing at 5,106 meters (16,752 ft), Larke La demands an early start around 5 AM to avoid the strong winds that rise later in the morning and make the pass more difficult to cross.
From the pass, the view behind you feels pure, peaceful, and otherworldly. You can see Larke Peak to the south and a sense of resting beneath the great Himalayan giants to the north. Moving ahead, the magnificent Annapurna range unfolds before your eyes. The long, dark-blue mountainous ridges and the striking appearance of Annapurna II on the left side create an unforgettable memory.
Descending further, you are greeted by a grand wall of Himalayan peaks and glaciers, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, Nemjung, Kang Guru, and Singh Himal, forming a breathtaking glacial amphitheater.
To put it simply, this single view alone makes the entire Manaslu Circuit Trek absolutely worthwhile.

Villages & Local Life on the Manaslu Circuit
During the first few days along the Budhi Gandaki Valley, trekkers pass through beautiful Gurung villages. As the trail continues into the Nubri Valley, you will encounter Tibetan-influenced communities with a lifestyle shaped by centuries-old traditions.
This region reflects a rich history of trans-Himalayan trade and deep-rooted Buddhist culture. After Deng, the villages showcase a truly unique Tibetan way of life. Settlements such as Namrung, Lihi, Sho, Hinang, Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo feature monasteries, mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags, offering a deeply immersive cultural experience.
Daily life here revolves around yak herding, seasonal farming, and religious practices.
Accommodation & Food on the Manaslu Circuit Trek
The Manaslu Circuit Trek operates on a teahouse (lodge) system, where basic but reliable accommodation is provided by local families. Rooms are typically twin-sharing, and heating is usually available only in the dining area, often using traditional yak dung stoves. Facilities become simpler as altitude increases.
Meals commonly include Dal-bhat, noodles, soups, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables, all designed to provide the necessary energy for high-altitude trekking.
Flora, Fauna & Conservation Areas
The trek passes through both the Manaslu Conservation Area (MCAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), featuring diverse landscapes ranging from subtropical forests to alpine meadows and glacial terrain.
Wildlife in this region may include blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and a variety of bird species, highlighting the area’s rich biodiversity.
As one of Nepal’s most sensitive and protected trekking regions, it is essential to practice responsible and environmentally friendly trekking.
Manaslu Circuit vs Annapurna Circuit Difficulty
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered more remote and physically demanding for several key reasons:
Less-traveled trails: Unlike the Annapurna Circuit, which attracts thousands of trekkers every year, Manaslu sees far fewer visitors. This means lodges, shops, and infrastructure are limited, so trekkers often have to carry extra supplies or be prepared for basic accommodations.
Challenging terrain: The trail includes long ascents, steep descents, loose gravel, glacial moraines, and sections that can be snow-covered depending on the season. These conditions require good stamina, balance, and trekking experience.
Higher altitude exposure: The trek crosses Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m, which is physically demanding and requires proper acclimatization. Altitude sickness risk is higher, and medical facilities are sparse along the route.
Remoteness & limited support: The region has fewer villages and trekking facilities, so help in emergencies is harder to access. Trekkers must rely on guides and self-sufficiency, unlike Annapurna, where help is more readily available.
Solitude & adventure: The combination of fewer people, rugged trails, and untouched landscapes offers trekkers a sense of adventure and serenity that is hard to find on busier routes.
